Hello from Frankfurt / Krakow

Dear All !

I'm new here in your forum and also new in Germany. Therefore, I'm writing in English but I hope that with time I'll also improve my German.

Flyfishing is my hobby since I was 6 years old so... it will be almost 26 years now. I grown up in Poland and improved my fishing skill on the rivers like San, Raba and Dunajec populated in majority with graylings and trouts. I particularly enjoy to 'hunt' for graylings using personally tied dry flies and little not heavy nymphs.

Currently I'm working at the Franfurt University... thinking in meantime where to go for fishing next year... if possible around

I have a hope to meet interesting people here, arrange some fishing together either in Germany or in Poland.

By the way: which material did you use for tying the wings of SK 18 and SK 19? Are there really fethers from which you did cut out each second fibre - as it seems to me? However that's looking great. Compliments!

Hi Michal,

welcome to the mad crowd!
Unfortunately Frankfurt is not the most exiting location to start fly-fishing expeditions from. To get to a reasonable trout/grayling stream one has to travel quite a distance. Availabilty of permits is another issue. But, if you're lucky you can make the right contacts here in the forum.
And, if you are content with fishing for Pike, Zander, Perch and the predator family of the Cyprinids, then you can have quite good opportunities in the Main river upstream of Frankfurt.
Supposedly, a good start would perhaps be to contact the Heartland Fly Fishers in Hanau (30 kilometers easterly of Frankfurt) and attend their monthly meetings.

How far did your German progress? Can you read a German text (should be so. otherwise you wouldn't be able to browse through the forum)? If yes, it might be a sensible procedure that you submit your contributions in English and boardies could reply in German. This would make it easier for people with little English to contact you.

Finally, it would be interesting to hear what sort of job you are doing at Frankfurt University.

First a few words about the website. In fact this is the website I made for my father who has his home fly tying business in Poland. I used to tie flies as well but when I went abroad for my PhD I started to suffer from the lack of time. Now I have some new job and somehow more time which I hope will allow me to re-start my flyfishing hobby. However I can answer your question: the wings for SK 18/19 are made of rooster feather. The feather has short hairs at the end and quite long at the beginning, near to the rooster body. The part of feather with short hairs you use for hackle and the part with long hairs for wings. Before you tie the latter you comb it. If you have more questions do not hesitate to ask. If I cannot answer I will call my father

Thank for your post. I have checked the website of the flyfishing club. In fact it is hard to read German however there is nice web browser which can help. So, currently I'm using Google Chrome and I ask the software to translate pages to English in a fly. Translation from German to English works quite well, so I'm able to follow some texts. Then, also Peter replied to my post (Thank you !) so things are becoming much easier.

To give you an answer about my job: I'm currently a postdoc at the Uni/ Campus Riedberg. I work for some physics experiment similar to the one currently ongoing at CERN. However, I'm not a physicist but let me say kind of "bridge" between physics and electronic engineering. I take care about particle detectors and accompanying hardware that later on physicists use for their experiment.
